innovation to deliver product differentiation
Fueling an
asset
One of the largest mutual fund organizations in the world based in the U.S. sought a solution to educate financial advisors about factor exposures. They required a robust infrastructure to power an easy-to-understand front-end advisor tool.
We developed an application comprised of custom-defined MSCI tools that provide factor exposures and optimization for the client’s front-end Factor Investing Tool.
MSCI Factor applications provided the necessary technology our client needed to differentiate their products. The advisor tool enables financial advisors to customize investors’ tilts toward the factors that influence portfolio performance.

Tailoring solutions for an
manager
08
The head of a Delta One Trading Desk for one of America’s largest financial services companies was looking for a quantitative solution (optimization tool and factor risk model) to use when buy side institutions purchase a swap contract (in the form of a hedge basket of stocks) from a sell side bank for risk hedging in the form of a hedge basket of stocks.
They sought our help to construct custom factor models to incorporate factor strategies into their portfolios. We offered MSCI Barra Factor Models to help them deliver the quality in-depth content.
The client was able to differentiate and compete for hedge basket business by delivering custom, short-term hedging solutions for their clients, to help them power better investment decisions.

Improving a
sovereign
wealth fund’s
risk management framework
One of the Middle East’s largest sovereign wealth funds were looking to elevate the quality of the risk analysis of their investments, while maintaining all their data in-house. They were unable to compute some of the more complex calculations themselves and started to look for a provider that could help streamline these complex tasks.
We developed a unique solution that was able to provide the data necessary to conduct complex calculations inhouse. The solution combined MSCI BarraOne and Models Direct with a custom implementation that connected our platforms seamlessly with our client’s unique infrastructure.
Complex analytics are all run in-house, and the enriched data feeds their internal visualization and decision-making processes, creating a more rigorous risk analysis of the firm’s investments.

Enhancing a
asset allocation process
pension
One of the largest defined-benefit public pension funds in the U.S. was looking for a reliable global measure for real estate to strengthen its strategic allocation process. At the time, real assets comprised less than 10% of the total portfolio; they had a target allocation of 13%.
MSCI emphasized the BarraOne platform to help the client identify and manage risk exposure in a unified analytical framework. They chose a custom benchmark, co-published by MSCI and the Pension Real Estate Association (PREA), in lieu of a broad market benchmark.
The client adopted MSCI’s custom benchmark in April 2017, and in June 2018 became the first U.S. public pension plan to adopt MSCI’s U.S. Real Estate Index (MSCI/PREA U.S. Property Fund Index) as the official policy benchmark for its real assets allocation.

Streamlining an
operations
insurance
company’s
The new CEO of a European insurance company wanted to align the asset management teams with a new strategy to achieve greater transparency into their overall portfolio, and to provide the team with consistent measurement tools for markets and funds.
We delivered MSCI Real Estate Enterprise Analytics with a total portfolio view; a custom European benchmark; and composite views of each asset management team and high-profile assets.
The client now has a single platform for the whole organization and management views they now integrate into the strategic management process.

Enabling an
to scale its operation
investment
bank
The fund administration team of a leading global financial services firm focused primarily on hedge funds was looking to win the business of smaller hedge funds. They wanted to differentiate themselves from their competition by offering more value-add services to their current administration business.
We designed a commercial model that allowed our client to seamlessly connect MSCI’s Barra Factor Risk Reporting to their clients’ hedge fund portfolios, providing an economical way to service a key client segment.
Our client positioned the access to Barra factors information as value-add to their current suite of Fund Administration services, enabling hedge fund clients to see the factor tilts they were previously unaware of.
13
Streamlining a
regulatory reporting
bank’s
The custody and fund administration subsidiary of a leading global bank, was looking for a robust solution that included liquidity risk analytics and regulatory reporting capabilities to support 315 mutual funds across 12 asset management firms. They required extensive asset class coverage; risk analytics to help them meet SEC requirements; and streamlined regulatory reporting.
We recommended LiquidityMetrics that combines both liquidity risk analytics and regulatory reporting to quantify the liquidity risk of financial instruments across all asset classes to help them assess compliance with SEC regulations.
Our client was able to use our tools to provide a complete risk and compliance solution to their clients, including the ability to classify investments for the SEC’s prescribed liquidity buckets ‘Highly Liquid’, ‘Moderately Liquid’, ‘Less Liquid’ and ‘Illiquid’.

Delivering a cost-effective way for a
to provide ESG⁴ transparency
wealth
An American multinational wealth manager sought to change the outside perception of the firm to appeal to millennials and to attract new assets by focusing on ESG investment strategies.
We designed a simplified way for the client’s retail clients and financial advisors to access ESG research on companies and mutual fund holdings.
Our flexible technology enabled the client to build a custom solution that would appeal to a younger generation of investors. Its “impact investing” program is gaining traction thanks to a user-friendly interface that adds environmental, social and governance ratings.

client acquisition through efficiencies
manager's
One of the world’s largest multinational investment bank and financial services companies headquartered in Europe was looking to develop a standard offering for their wealth advisory clients who have increasingly asked for sustainable investment solutions. The goal was to uncover the common denominators of past ESG requests to develop a standard framework that would meet 80% of their requests.
We built a seamless interface to present the data in an easy-to-use format and we are building a reporting framework that allows advisors to create an ESG performance report with a single click.
The easy to use interface increase their wealth advisors' adoption of the tool and helped increase their ability to attract new clients. This enabled them to fulfill their longer-term objective of generational wealth preservation by providing product features that would appeal to the children and grandchildren of the clients.
